Getting Started as a Woman in Trades
Q: How did you get started in the construction industry?
“I began working as a TA at ASC (the Ships), and then moved to glass making at Orora. I was the first female machine operator there. Finally, after cold calling 120–130 carpentry companies, I got an apprenticeship.”
Ally’s journey began with sheer determination. From working at ASC to becoming the first female machine operator at Orora, she paved her way into the trades by taking chances and relentlessly pursuing opportunities. Cold-calling over 100 companies for an apprenticeship showed her grit—qualities every woman in trades needs.

A Family Legacy of Trades
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in the trades?
“My pop was an electrician, his father a carpenter, and some of my fondest memories were tinkering in the shed with him. Thinking about my career, I felt uninspired with the typical choices and wanted something different, so I thought back to my pop and considered a trade.”
Before anything else, Ally’s passion for the trades came from her family’s influence, particularly her grandfather. Inspired by memories of working with him, she turned her back on conventional career paths to follow something more hands-on and rewarding. It’s a perfect reminder for any woman in trades to reflect on what truly excites them.
The Rewards of Perseverance as a Woman in Trades

Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Trades
Q: What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
“Being promoted and upskilled in my previous jobs was a huge reason for looking for other opportunities. I was often told I wasn’t suited or capable of certain job roles or positions. I proved them wrong and excelled at every opportunity.”
The path wasn’t always easy. Ally often faced doubts about her abilities, but each obstacle became a stepping stone. Her resilience in overcoming these challenges is a testament to what women in trades can achieve when they refuse to let others define their worth.
